Child-bearing and normal aging can result in changes to the body that impact activity and health. Issues such as excessive bleeding or urinary incontinence can have a hugely negative impact on quality of life, and sometimes surgery is the best option for regaining health.
Undergoing surgery is a big decision, but improvements in technique have simplified recovery for many patients. In 2005 my partner and I pioneered laparoscopic surgical technique in Idaho. Prior to this time, hysterectomies were always an open surgery involving many weeks of recovery. Those days are gone. Commonly, our patients can leave the hospital on the day of surgery and return to normal activity within days.
